Soldier arrested for killing wife

TANGERANG: First Brig. Hamdani, a military soldier posted in Karawaci, Tangerang, was arrested by the Jakarta Military Police on Monday evening for the murder of his wife, Yoyo Rohayah, 25.

Yoyo, a mother of one, was taken to Al Qadr Hospital in Karawaci at about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday by Hamdani, who told doctors his wife had drunk poison. The victim died early Monday morning.

Her family became suspicious when they saw bruises and cigarette burns on Yoyo's body. Yoyo was buried on Monday, but her family had her disinterred and the body sent to the hospital for autopsy.

"My daughter was healthy when she came to our house on Sunday. But early Monday, her husband told me that she died after drinking poison," Yoyo's father, M. Sukri, said.

Zulhasmar, a forensic pathologist who examined the body, said that based on a preliminary examination, it was determined the victim died from drinking poison, but there were also signs of violence on the body.

"We found insecticide in the victim's stomach. But we have yet to determine if she took that herself or if she was forced," he said. -- JP
