Solarex project on target

JAKARTA (JP): Solarex, an American joint venture between Amoco Corp. and Enron Corp, said on Monday that its US$25 million solar project in Indonesia was on schedule despite the prolonged economic crisis.

The company said in a statement that of the 36,400 planned solar systems, more than 21,000 had been delivered and installed by the end of September with the remaining 15,400 units expected to be installed by late 1999.

Les Poole, the Solarex regional manager, said: "There are no real negative aspects as a result of the currency problem. In fact we have probably received a higher profile than before as one of the few IMF-approved humanitarian projects continuing in the region."

Solarex, which claims to be the world's most experienced manufacturer of solar power equipment, said the project aimed to bring electricity to people living in areas the national grid would not reach in the next five years.

The project, Solarex said, was the world's largest solar power project for rural areas. (29)
