Soccer supporters should show dignity

From Neraca

It's all right to support one's soccer team, but one should behave oneself. We, Jakarta residents, receive out-of-town supporters with open arms. Jakarta belongs to all Indonesians, thus, we must look after it.

I feel saddened by the death of soccer supporters. Six Semarang supporters were crushed to death by a train close to Lenteng Agung station. Another person died at Jatinegara station due to contact with an electrical wire.

On account of these accidents, penniless supporters from out of town should be aware that their actions are an imitation of Western hooliganism. These actions have no use and bring only disaster.

I strongly deplore the robbing of passengers on the train that had crushed the supporters from Semarang. This is no longer hooliganism but criminal behavior.

Supporters should be well-prepared before they travel. They should, at least, have enough money for transportation, meals and lodgings. English hooligans may be brutal but they can provide for their basic needs and they try not to violate the law.

If out-of-town supporters have limited means, they can earn money as buskers and hawkers. With that money they can make the return journey home. If need be, they can actually ask for help at police stations.

I agree with Jakarta governor Sutiyoso's order to security forces to take stern measures against unruly supporters. The supporters should show dignity; as orientals on a visit to another people's "house".

In these difficult times, why look for more trouble?
