Soccer scandal probe continues

BOGOR (JP): Jakarta Police are still working to determine whether more referees or officials were involved in a soccer match-fixing scandal.

Jakarta Police chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata said over the weekend that police were yet to set a date to transfer the case to court, Antara reported.

He said the investigations were being handled by the Jakarta Police and would probably involve the National Police if new developments require it.

The Indonesian Soccer Association has suspended eight referees for between seven years and 10 years for their alleged involvement in the match-fixing and bribery scandal in the Indonesian League from 1994 to 1997.

Police announced last month that referees Nasruddin, Khalik, Helmi and Sasmuryadi and a soccer club official, Dadang S, were named suspects in the match fixing. They join senior referee Djafar Umar, who was banned for 20 years by the soccer body. The six will be tried under the 1980 Bribery Law. (pan)
