Soccer fans die in road accident

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: Five soccer fans were killed and another 43 injured as their overloaded truck overturned in Way Jepara on Sunday, Antara reported yesterday.

Antara said the truck driver fled the scene.

The accident that occurred at about 6:30 p.m. in a village about 65 kilometers north of the capital involved supporters of a local soccer club, Rudam Way Kandis, after a friendly game.

Those injured were admitted to Immanuel and Abdul Muluk hospitals.

Chief of the Way Jepara police precinct Second Lt. Zulhelmi said many of the survivors suffered broken arms and concussion.

Eyewitnesses said the truck was swaying before it landed upside down in a bend. The passengers were thrown out and some were crushed by the truck. (pan)
