Smoking proven bad for sex life: Expert

JAKARTA (JP): If smokers are not deterred by the barrage of warnings detailing what cigarettes can do to their health, here is one more compelling reason to stop. Smoking is bad for your sex life. And this applies to both men and women.

For men smoking causes low sperm production, Farid Aziz, a specialist in gynecology, told The Jakarta Post yesterday.

"Smoking affects blood vessels in the body, which in turn affects sperm production. And a low sperm count can lead to infertility," Farid said.

With women the habit increases the risk of cervical cancer, he said. "The nicotine makes it easier for the virus to get into the body," Farid added.

The government yesterday appealed to smokers in the country to observe the World Health Organization's "No Tobacco Day" on May 31, as part of an international drive to curb tobacco consumption and promote a smoke-free society. In the past, "No Tobacco Day" has passed largely ignored.

Robert J. Kim-Farley, WHO representative in Indonesia, explained that this year's theme will target sports and cultural performances which have received generous sponsorship from cigarette makers.

The WHO is appealing to both artists and sports communities to strive to reduce their dependency on cigarette money, he said. (31)
