Smoke returns to Pekanbaru

PEKANBARU, Riau: Simpang Tiga International Airport was closed yesterday as thick smoke, believed to be from nearby forest fires, returned, Antara reported.

The smoke reduced visibility at the airport to a mere 200 meters, making it unsafe for planes to land, an official at the control tower said.

The smoke, which is also hazardous to health, forced many people in Pekanbaru to stay at home. Many complained of respiratory problems and eye irritation, the news agency said.

The city's traffic office also warned motorists to reduce speed and pedestrians to be extra careful. (09)
