Slum families to be moved to apartments

The South Jakarta mayoralty is planning to move some 7,000 families currently living in slum areas at three subdistricts to apartment complexes.

South Jakarta mayor H Pardjoko explained here recently that slum areas in the Manggarai, Bukit Duri and Pela Mampang subdistricts will be demolished and the people living there will be moved to healthier surroundings in apartments.

"The program is intended to help them improve their living conditions and eradicate poverty," Pardjoko said as quoted by Terbit.

He said that the 'slum' designation is based on the health aspects, hygiene, social environment, and the physical infrastructure of a location.

Pardjoko called on the more affluent residents of South Jakarta to become foster parents for the children in the three subdistricts who are unable to pay for a public school education.(mds)
