Slamet Abdul Sjukur to stage latest composition in Bandung

JAKARTA (JP): Noted composer Slamet Abdul Sjukur will present his latest piece, Wangi (Good Scent), specially created for his performance at the French Cultural Center (CCF) in Bandung on Thursday as part of the European Union Music Festival.

In his show, Sjukur, chairman of the Indonesian Composers' Association, will be accompanied by Ratna Ully R. as a dancer.

Apart from presenting his work, Sjukur was also giving a workshop on his concept of "minimax music", the principle of maximally utilizing the minimal, at the cultural center on Wednesday and one on March 25 for, among others, students of the Bandung-based Teachers' Training Institute.

The concept has been quite often discussed and for five years it has been applied at the Mandala kindergarten in Surabaya. It aims to improve the students' awareness of music and to teach them to see limitations as a challenge to be overcome by the continuous use of imagination.

Sjukur is also scheduled to be a speaker in a seminar on musical composition at the cultural center on March 25.

The festival, which kicked off last week in Bandung, features world renowned music ensembles from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, France and Finland. The concerts will be staged in a number of cities, including Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya, and will last until April 2. (ste)
