Sjafrie to replace Sutiyoso Wednesday

JAKARTA (JP): Brig. Gen. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin will be installed Wednesday as the new Jakarta military commander.

Sjafrie, who recently left his position as city military chief of staff, replaces Sutiyoso, who has been elected Jakarta governor.

The 1974 graduate of the Armed Forces Academy will be installed in a military ceremony to be led by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Wiranto at the City Military Command headquarters on Jl. Mayjen. Sutoyo in East Jakarta.

Sjafrie will be promoted to rank of major general prior to his installation.

Born in Ujungpandang on Oct. 30, 1952, he was with the elite Army's Special Force (Kopassus) from 1975 to 1991.

He was appointed chief of the Presidential Guard Corps' Group A in 1993, chief of the Bogor Military Subcommand in the following year, and subsequently chief of staff of the Jakarta Garrison in 1995.

His tours of duty include Aceh, East Timor and Irian Jaya.

Sjafrie also joined in a series of military exercises at both local and international institutions.

He received his master's in business administration in 1993. (jun)
