Six students injured in brawl

JAKARTA (JP): Six students were injured in a brawl on Monday night in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, when students from two private universities got into a dispute after a music concert, a police officer said on Tuesday.

City police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis said the brawl took place at around 8 p.m., when dozens of students from the National Institute of Science and Technology (ISTN) in Srengseng Sawah in South Jakarta went to a concert at the Dharma Persada University campus in Duren Sawit.

"The Dharma Persada students got offended and attacked the students from ISTN when some of the visitors pelted stones at the campus," Lubis said.

The brawl stopped only after nearby residents managed to drive away fighting students and force student leaders from the two universities to meet to settle the problem.

"There was a misunderstanding between the two groups of students during an earlier concert on Sunday night," Lubis said.

The wounded students, who were all from Dharma Persada University, were rushed to an Islamic hospital in Pondok Kopi but were discharged after being treated.

"None of the ISTN students were injured as they may have prepared themselves for the attack," Lubis said.

Lubis said no arrests were made from the brawl and the case was being investigated by East Jakarta Police. (emf)
