Six states competing in bowling c'ship
JAKARTA (JP): Six countries are competing in the 13th Indocement Cup International Open Bowling Championship which began at the Jaya Ancol Bowling Center yesterday.
The men's world champion, Filipino Paeng Nepomuceno and women's world champion, Australian Cara Honeychurch, are competing as will as national champions of Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines.
Indonesia will use the event to prepare its bowlers for the 19th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. The men's team includes David Paruhun Sitorus, Gatot Arya Nugroho and Donto Nurhman.
Veteran bowler Popie Tambis will lead the women's teams which includes Irawati Chandra and Debora Bustami.
The ten-day competition ends July 19.
Committee officials met Indonesian Sport Council Chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar yesterday to report on the tournament's progress.
The event features men's and women's singles, doubles, trios. All Events, Grade A, Grade B and the Open Division will be officially opened by Wismoyo on July 14.
The committee is offering a Volvo 850 and Mazda Cronos sedan as a Perfect Game 300 Award for the bowler who bowls in all events including the Master Final and the Master Qualifying Final.
A 100-gram gold bar is on offer the Highest Game Award will be presented to the winner of All Events and Master Final.
"With the participation of outstanding bowlers from abroad, the championship is a good arena for Indonesian bowlers to prepare for the coming SEA Games," Wismoyo said. (03)
