Six men to represent Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): The City Council has appointed six city officials to represent Jakarta at the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), which is assigned the duty of electing the country's leader and adapting five-year state guidelines.

Among the six representatives selected in yesterday's plenary session were Governor Surjadi Soedirdja, Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso and City Council Speaker Edy Waluyo.

The other three were H.M. Syah Manaf of the Golkar faction, Chudrin Hasbullah of the United Development Party and Sahala P. Sinaga of Indonesia's Democratic Party.

The election of provincial representatives is in line with Chapter 2 of the 1945 Constitution, which says members of MPR are made up of representatives from each of Indonesia's 27 provinces, including Jakarta.

According to Edy Waluyo, the council has set up a team to select six candidates to represent Jakarta at the assembly as ruled in a decree issued recently by the minister of home affairs.

"The six candidates have fulfilled all requirements," Edy said. (ste)
