Six injured in Cipinang fire

JAKARTA (JP): At least 15 houses in a densely populated area of Cipinang, East Jakarta, were gutted by fire on Thursday, injuring six local residents, including two seriously.

The East Jakarta Fire Department sent 10 fire engines to extinguish the blaze, which began at 9:30 a.m.

Witnesses said the two victims with serious injuries, identified as Rika and Zulkarnaen, were rushed to the nearby Persahabatan Hospital.

The other four victims were identified as Mamat, 60; Slamet, 22; Setu, 30; and Supardi, 27, Antara reported.

The fire, which left 31 families homeless, is thought to have started in the home of Buyung Darwis, a local food vendor.

"A stove being used by two of Buyung's children leaked kerosene which then ignited and spread rapidly through his house," Didik, the neighborhood chief, said.
