Six councillors arrested for graft

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Banyumas Police have named 27 former and serving Banyumas regency councillors as suspects in a graft case involving the council's 2002-2003 budget.

Twenty-one of them had been questioned by local police while six of them had been detained. Of the six detained councillors, four are still serving on the council.

Banyumas Police chief Adj. Comm. Erwin Triwanto said on Friday that number of suspects could increase as 43 other former councillors were being questioned over the same case.

"Up to Friday, 21 of them have been questioned. The rest will be questioned on Monday," he said. -- JP
