Six badly injured in toll road accident

JAKARTA: Six people were badly injured in a single accident at kilometer 50 of the Jakarta-Merak toll road on Sunday afternoon.

PT Marga Mandala Sakti toll road operator paramedic, Santo, said that the speeding van, which was full of passengers, overturned after its left rear tire blew at around 4:30 p.m.

The driver lost control and the van overturned, crossing the median strip to the other side of the road heading to Merak.

Santo alleged that the van was traveling at more than 100 kilometers per hour, the maximum speed allowed on the toll road.

The six injured passengers are being treated at Serang General Hospital. They are Mariah, 40; Tosad, 35; Mariam, 38; Fatimah, 40; Sutambih, 35; and an unidentified passenger.

The passengers aboard the ill-fated van were on their way to Madura island, East Java, from Pangkalpinang, Riau.

Eight other passengers were also treated for light injuries. -- JP
