Six arrested for keeping weapon

JAKARTA (JP): City police arrested six men for illegal weapon possession on Thursday, during a routine check at the gates of the People's Legislative Assembly/House of Representatives (MPR/DPR) in Central Jakarta.

City police detectives chief for general crimes Comr. Tito Karnavian said the six men, who were from Jombang, East Java, were in a Toyota Kijang van when they were stopped by the police.

"Police found two machetes in the van, hidden under the car seat," Tito said.

They were taken to city police headquarters for questioning.

Some 100 protesters from the City Front staged a rally to demand the disbandment of the Golkar Party outside the MPR/DPR on Thursday.

The protesters were later joined by the Indonesian Islamic Student Movement (PMII), who demanded that legislators seriously consider the people's needs over the interests of certain parties. (ylt)
