Six alleged rebels surrender to TNI

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Six alleged members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) surrendered on Monday to security authorities in the restive province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, military spokesman Lt. Col. Asep Sapari said in Lhokseumawe on Tuesday.

One of the alleged rebels, whose was not identified, gave himself up to Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel in South Aceh regency. The five other suspected rebels -- identified as Ramli, Saifuddin, Muhammad Anshari, M Dahlan and Ahmad Jaiz -- surrendered in Aceh Jaya regency, Asep said.

"However, it has been reported that Ali Amat, 36, a civilian from Telaga Meuku village in Aceh Tamian district, was being held hostage by rebels on Monday," Asep said, adding that Ali Amat had been taken from his house at about 10 p.m. by at least 10 gunmen. -- Antara
