The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) announced on Friday
the temporary results of its verification of the wealth reports
of presidential and vice presidential candidates.
However, not all candidates have updated their wealth reports,
since they first submitted their reports to the now-defunct Civil
Servants Wealth Audit Commission (KPKPN).
"We have not cross-checked their reports due to lack of time.
We have yet to ask assistance from consultants to trace their
wealth," said KPK deputy chairman Sjahruddin Rasul.
Should there be an election runoff, the KPK would hire
independent consultants to trace the wealth of presidential and
vice presidential candidates participating in the second round of
the election scheduled for Sept. 20.
Unlike other candidates, presidential candidate Megawati
Soekarnoputri and vice presidential candidate Gen. (ret) Agum
Gumelar have yet to appoint legal counsels to explain their
wealth reports to the commission.
Sjahruddin said the commission would continue to update the
wealth reports of the candidates and is expected to announce the
results later.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) requires presidential
and vice presidential candidates to declare their wealth and
assets.
Vice presidential candidate Siswono Yudohusodo is the richest
candidate with a total wealth of Rp 320 billion (US$34.8
million), according to the KPK's provisional results. His
running mate, Amien Rais, however, is the poorest with only Rp
1.8 billion and $14,000.
Most candidates own a sizable amount of dollars except for
vice presidential candidates Salahuddin Wahid and Hasyim Muzadi
as well as presidential candidate Gen. (ret) Susilo Bambang
Yudhoyono.
KPU has said that the presidential and vice presidential
elects might not be installed into office should the KPK find
hard evidence that some of their wealth originated from illegal
sources.
