Siswono backs Gus Dur's stance Israeli body

KENDAL, Central Java (JP): Minister of Transmigration Siswono Yudohusodo is backing enigmatic Moslem leader Abdurrahman Wahid's disputed decision to become a member of the Shimon Peres Institute.

"I'm sure Gus Dur weighed it up carefully before he decided to accept the offer. He is a far-sighted leader," Siswono told The Jakarta Post.

Gus Dur is what Abdurrahman, who chairs the 30-million strong Nahdlatul Ulama Moslem organization, is affectionately called by his colleagues.

His recent announcement to accept offer to join the Jerusalem- based Shimon Peres Institute has fueled a lively debate, notably among fellow Moslem leaders.

Gus Dur argues that he would be able to voice Moslems' interests in the organization that is dedicated to regional and international peace efforts.

Indonesia, a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, has no diplomatic relations with Israel.

"I hope Gus Dur will be able to contribute ideas to peace efforts in the Middle East, especially in the search for a solution to the long-standing Palestine-Israel conflict," Siswono said.

Siswono, acclaimed for his statesmanship, said he believed the Shimon Peres Institute officials were impressed by Gus Dur's religious tolerance.

"Gus Dur is a figure who is acceptable among all religious groups. He is not only popular in Moslem circles but he also has good relations with Catholic priests and monks," he said.

His membership of the institution is in line with his dream to contribute to peace and religious harmony, the minister said.

Moslem leaders are divided over Gus Dur's decision. His critics say he should have consulted with other NU leaders and government officials before deciding to accept the offer. (har/pan)
