Singaporean held in harassment case

BATAM, Riau: Police here are detaining a Singaporean national for allegedly sexually harassing a six-year-old girl on Batam island in Riau province

The suspect, identified only by his initials as A.A. bin S, has admitted the charges laid by the police.

The man had been beaten up by local residents and thereafter detained by police on Saturday after he was accused of fondling the young girl, who is a playmate of his son.

Police said on Sunday they were investigating the case.

The suspect is married to an Indonesian woman in Batam, situated around 20 kilometers south of Singapore.

The industrial island of Batam is a popular weekend getaway for Singaporeans in search of cheap shopping and night entertainment. --Antara
