Shorter curfew imposed in Ambon

AMBON, Maluku: Military authorities here announced on Saturday that the city-wide curfew remained effective, although its length would be reduced by one hour due to improving security conditions.

"Because Ambon is gradually getting back to normal and people are already back in business, we have decided to end the curfew one hour earlier at 5 a.m.," Pattimura Military Commander overseeing Maluku Brig. Gen. Max Tamaela said.

A Curfew was imposed in Ambon after clashes broke out after Christmas last year. People have been restricted from outdoor activities between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. every day.

He said that although the violence had receded over the past two months, people remained anxious to start their daily activities earlier. (49/edt)
