Shopping center catches fire

PEKANBARU, Riau: The city's shopping center caught fire yesterday, causing extensive damage but no injuries, a press report said.

Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out on the second floor at 7:40 a.m. when shoppers began to stream in, Antara reported.

Fire brigade managed to put it out about 30 minutes later largely due to the light traffic on the streets surrounding the mall.

Police said they have yet to determine the cause of the fire and calculate the resulting loss. (rms)
