Shangri-La to manage second Jakarta hotel
JAKARTA (JP): The Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is to manage a second property in the city, its fourth in Indonesia.
The planned 450-room hotel, to be called the Traders Hotel, on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, in front of Jalan Gajah Mada Plaza, is owned and developed by PT Nusapuri Lestarijaya at a cost of about US$50 million. The construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 1998.
The three hotels the 25-year old Shangri-La company currently manages in Indonesia are the Shangri-La Jakarta, which opened in 1994, the Shangri-La Surabaya in Surabaya, East Java, which opened in 1995, and the Bali Dynasty Resort, in Kuta, Bali.
The Shangri-La Jakarta is owned by PT Satyaprima Konsulindo, a consortium of the Kuok group of Hong Kong, Lyman group of Indonesia and the pension fund of the state-owned Bank BNI 1946.
The 16-story Shangri-La Surabaya is owned by PT Saripuri Permai Hotel, which groups the Kuok group as well as Surabaya's business group Sinar Galaxi and the country's largest business conglomerate, the Salim Group, which also partly controls the Bali Dynasty together with businessman Sudwikatmono.
Traders Hotels are a new brand of Shangri-La, aimed at mid- market, cost-conscious travelers. They feature smaller rooms and fewer bars and restaurants than the existing Shangri-Las.
There are currently two Traders hotels in operation, in Beijing and Manila. In addition to the planned Traders in Jakarta, two more are under construction, in Shenyang, China, and in Yangon, Myanmar. (icn)
