Sex education necessary

Referring to the letter by Muradi Muhamad entitled Sex education not necessary, published in The Jakarta Post, on Nov. 14, 1994, I would like to make the following comments.

I do not agree with the writer's opinion. In fact, we do need it. Some people may argue that everybody will ultimately know what sex is about as he/she grows. How can we know about the subject if nobody tells us, we the younger generation in particular. Must we learn about sex from pornographic films, or the like? Muradi said that moral education is more important.

Let me make a comparison. Is it enough for us to eat rice only? Certainly not, we need something else to go with it. The same is true with sex because it is part of human life. Only a few people can control their sexual desires -- pastors, monks (bhiksu), and the like. These people are destined to take up such a profession.

People may fear the negative impact of sex education. But that depends of the individual person. I believe we can benefit from sex education.
