Seven years sought for former mayor

PADANG, West Sumatra: Prosecutors in a corruption trial at Padang district court on Thursday demanded a seven-year prison sentence for former Padang mayor Zuiyen Rais.

Zuiyen allegedly approved the council's budget proposal, the contents of which were in violation of government decree No. 110/2000.

The approval paved the way for councillors to misappropriate the budget, causing state losses of Rp 8.4 billion (US$893,617).

Zuiyen served as Padang mayor between 1993 and 2003. -- JP
