Seven die in speedboat crash

PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan: Two speedboats collided on a river here, leaving at least seven people dead and 35 missing, Antara reported on Sunday.

Boats carrying 50 and 31 passengers collided head-on while traveling on the Katingan River at around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Rescuers recovered seven bodies, including a woman and two children, the news agency said.

It said 39 passengers, among them a district chief, were rescued or swam to safety, and the many injured among the survivors were taken to a hospital in the provincial capital of Palangkaraya.
