Separatist & terrorist threat remains

From Koran Tempo

In 2004, the threat of separatism and terrorism will continue to be a topical issue to discuss and overcome. In the 21st century, the threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia is separatism, which has, since the founding of this country, become a major disturbance.

Besides, the emergence of international terrorism constitutes a threat to national security. Following the Bali bombings in October 2002, it has been discovered that transnational terrorist networks are operating in several Southeast Asian countries. This threat demands not only tough government policy and clear legislation, but also improved intelligence capacity and skilled antiterrorist units.

Separatist bodies like the Free Aceh Movement and Free Papua Organization, as well as international terrorist rings, can never be tolerated because they are against the values of humanity and civilization. The agenda to deal with terrorism and separatism should be implemented at the same time, otherwise national security will be disturbed.
