Senen vendors face eviction

JAKARTA: More than 33,000 street vendors near the Senen traditional market in Central Jakarta face eviction as the municipal administration moves forward with plans to clean up the market.

"We are coordinating with relevant institutions before launching the (eviction) program. Hopefully we can clean up the market by the end of this month," Central Jakarta Mayor Muhayat said.

Muhayat said the vendors had to be removed to revitalize the market, one of the largest and oldest in the city.

"I promise they will be moved to new locations, but not all of the vendors. I will prioritize vendors who are registered residents of Central Jakarta for relocation," he said. --JP.
