Senayan vendors protest eviction

JAKARTA: Dozens of vendors from the Senayan Vendors
Association (HPSJ) staged a protest at the City Council on
Friday, demanding that the management of the Bung Karno Sports
Complex halt plans to evict them.

HPSJ secretary-general Deden M. Ilham said the City Council in
May asked the management of the sports complex not to evict the
vendors, "but apparently the management ignored this request as,
in their last notice, they said the plan would proceed".

The management plans to evict the vendors from the eastern
parking lot of the sports complex and plant trees in the area.

"Earlier the management wanted to evict us because of people
illegally parking their cars there and the crime in the area, now
they are using the environmental issue .... If the management
insists on evicting us, small vendors, why do they allow the
cafes to stay open?" Deden asked.

The eastern parking lot of the sports complex is a favorite
gathering place, and there are at least 5,000 vendors working in
the area. -- JP

National park poachers nabbed

BOGOR: A type of African wood and certain types of ferns are
two of the top targets for illegal poachers at the Mount
Pangrango National Park, an official said on Thursday.

Head of the national park's conservation division, Memen
Suparman, said that 94 African wood trees and 70 ferns had been
poached since early this year.

"The tree poachers were caught red-handed trying to take the
rare flora, most of which was more than 15 years of age, while
the ferns we seized from a buyer in Caringin," Memen said.

He added that the wood was quite valuable material for
specialty boxes, while the ferns were about to be exported to
South Korea, where they are in demand.

Memen said the park poachers were local residents who live
near the national park. -- JP

Civil servants, soldiers to plant trees

BOGOR: Civil servants and soldiers have been told to donate 10
trees each for the municipality's regreening project that
culminates on Nov. 12, an officer said on Friday.

Capt. Dede Komaruddin of the Bogor district military command
said an estimated 53,000 trees would be collected from the
bureaucrats and soldiers.

"The trees will be planted along the banks of the Ciliwung and
Cisadane rivers, and along several roads downtown. Some of the
trees also will be donated to residents of the Cimanggu housing
complex, who have no trees in their backyards," he said.

He added that soldiers had been cultivating longan and durian
fruit tree seedlings over the last five months. -- JP
