Semarang hosts Golden Glove C'ships

SEMARANG (JP): Semarang will host the Golden Glove National Boxing Championships in February 2001. The event will feature 11 weight divisions.

"The championships will be attended by professional boxers from various clubs throughout the country. However, the fighters must meet requirements set by the Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina)," said the body's head of technical commission Ferry Moniaga on Monday evening.

"To qualify boxers need to meet one of the following six criteria. Either, be one of the national top five boxers, a finalist of last year's championships in Batam, a finalist of the 2000 National Games in Surabaya, a winner at the 1999 National Junior Championships in Jakarta, a member of the 2001 Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian (SEA) Games training center or be one of the best athletes in Pertina provincial chapters."

"There will only be 77 boxers competing in the event due to these selection requirements. We hope that the championships will be of a high standard as only the very best will be competing," Ferry said. (har)
