Security guards nabbed for stealing

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Four security guards of Matahari supermarket on Jl. Jend. Sudirman were arrested by local police for stealing supermarket goods.

Budi Hartono, the supermarket owner, told reporters on Thursday, that the shop's security guards had stolen various goods, including cigarettes, soap and clothes, worth millions of rupiah.

"They had operated for three months," Budi said, adding that the police were also questioning four other security guards over a similar case.

According to Budi, the security guards had the master keys of the cupboards and operated at night.

Banyumas Police chief Adj. Comr. Joko Supriyanto confirmed the arrest, saying that some women shopkeepers might also be involved in the theft. "Most of 22 security guards for the supermarket allegedly had roles in the theft." (45/sur)
