Secretary posts in E. Java vacant

SURABAYA: The East Java provincial administration is seeking replacements for seven regency and mayoralty secretaries, who have vacated their posts due to promotion.

The provincial secretary, Soenarjo, told Antara on Friday that he would summon on Monday the mayors of Madiun, Kediri and Batu and the regents of Probolinggo, Tuban, Sidoarjo and Malang to discuss the selection of their new secretaries.

"It will take us quite a long time to find people who fit the bill for the posts. The secretary is now the top post in the bureaucracy of a region's administration," Soenarjo said.

The regional administration law, set to be revoked in 2001, says a regent or mayor has the right to pick a maximum of three nominees, but their appointment must be approved by the governor.

Soenarjo said there were no special requirements for the nominees, but would be assessed according to their loyalty, achievements, quality and seniority.
