Second crane accident at SBDC

A plywood sheet that was being lifted by a crane fell onto a passing Honda sedan in front of the Sudirman Business District Center (SBCD) Suites construction project in South Jakarta on Friday afternoon.

The driver of the black Honda, Sutrisno, was not injured as the plywood fell onto the passenger side of the car. The car was badly dented, however, and the windows shattered.

It was the second accident involving the crane. On May 3, the crane collapsed killing three construction workers and injuring three others at the SBCD Suites site.

Eyewitnesses said the cable attaching the plywood sheet to the crane had loosened, dropping the plywood onto the Honda.

"The car looked new, the license plate number indicates that it was bought in May," a witness, who requested anonymity, said.

Developer PT Pembangunan Perumahan (PP) is constructing the SBCD Suites.

Jakarta Police detectives immediately arrived at the scene, which is next to their headquarters, to investigate the case. However, no official police statement has been issued.

The driver of the car was not at the scene when reporters arrived, neither were any PP officials.

Police had arrested three PP officials related to the May 3 accident for allegedly neglecting workplace safety. The three suspects may be charged with Article 359 of the Criminal Code on death caused by negligence. If convicted, they could be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison. -- JP
