Search and rescue team salvages airplane wreckage

The Cessna plane that went down after an attempt at an emergency landing on Lido Lake, Sukabumi, West Java, on June 21, with five people on board, was salvaged on Monday from the 18-meter-deep lake.

The salvage operation, which took two hours, was conducted by the search and rescue team from Aves Aerosport Club with help from locals.

The plane was put on an islet in the middle of the lake.

Yoseph Wardi from Aves rescue team said the plane would remain on the islet while a team investigated the cause of the crash.

The team comprises experts from Aves, the Indonesian Aerosport Federation and the Indonesian Air Force.

The pilot, Maj. Yohan Pahlawan, was killed in the crash, along with the four passengers; Australian parachutists Willy Elison and Priscilla Hall; parachuting instructor Edi Kristiono from Aves and Air Force member Roni Hendriono. -- JP
