Schoolgirl gives birth

SEMARANG, Central Java: A 17-year-old student of a state-run
high school in Banyumanik, Semarang, gave birth while sitting her
final examination, Antara reported on Sunday.

The student, identified only as SL, reportedly delivered the
birth inside the school's restroom and then put the baby in her
schoolbag. The bag was then placed among those of other students
when she entered the classroom for the examination.

A janitor discovered blood in the toilet and reported his
finding. Some teachers also said they had heard a baby cry.

The baby, the sex of which was not disclosed, died later in
the hospital.

The head of the local national education agency, Sukardi, said
he was deeply concerned by the incident, but at the same time he
hailed the spirit of the student who insisted on completing her
exams.

The student had undergone her final examination for sports,
which included pushups, situps, gymnastics and sprint.
