School students stage protest

MAKASSAR: Dozens of elementary school students staged a rally in front of Makassar municipality office on Monday, urging the local administration to cancel the exchange of land belonging to the administration and the school building.

The administration planned to barter the land and the building, built in 1938 on Jl. Latimojong with another site belonging to the administration on Jl. Veteran.

The administration's third assistant, Muhammad Latief, acknowledged the land exchange, saying that they intended to build a six-story school building in the new location.

"A businessman is offering a new and well-equipped school building. The old building is no longer feasible," Latief said after receiving the protesting students.

However, the students and their parents still objected to the plan, saying that it would cost them dearly as the new site was located far from their homes.-JP
