SBY urged to name members of KKR
JAKARTA: A human rights group said on Monday President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono must immediately select the 21 members of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (KKR), pointing out the government already missed a deadline for naming members.
In a statement, the Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy accused the President of ignoring the KKR. The institute said a selection committee submitted the names of 42 candidates for the commission four months ago.
"We believe the President has intentionally ignored Law No. 27/2004 on the KKR, which mandates the establishment of the commission six months after the law was issued in September. 2004," said Atnike Nova Sigiro, who heads the institute's rights campaign.
When up an running, the commission's main job will be to investigate major rights abuse cases since the country's independence in 1945. -- JP
