Sawmill workers laid off

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: Hundreds of sawmills' workers in the city have been laid off over the last few weeks because of the decreasing supply of logs.

Faudji, a sawmill owner, said the decreasing supply of logs to the city was in line with the lowering level of water streams in main rivers in the province.

The sawmills have supplied logs from the Central Kalimantan with the river transportation.

"It is better for the laid-off workers to seek other jobs because of the prolonged dry season," he said, citing more than 100 sawmills located along the Alalak River's bank had stopped their operation.
