Save the green turtle

KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: Kupang Regent Lt. Col. S.K. Lerik released four adult green turtles and 16 baby turtles in the Kupang Bay yesterday, marking the launch of a campaign to save the endangered species, Antara reported.

Although not officially an endangered species, the mayoralty has taken this initiative because in recent years poaching has significantly reduced the population of green turtles.

Signs proclaiming the ban on turtle poaching have been erected in various spots on the Kupang beach and other nearby islands. Violators face a maximum Rp 100 million fine.

The Kupang Bay has also been declared as a national marine park. (emb)
