Save Kartini and baby's lives

The photos of brides and grooms, most with babies in arms (The Jakarta Post , March 20, 2000) spoke volumes about the tolerance of the world's largest Muslim society. Here were hundreds of couples, most already blessed with the gift of new life, being gracefully accepted into the fold. My congratulations go to the brides and grooms and to the humane society that recognizes the value of life in all its permutations, poverty included.

It is sad indeed, that the United Arab Emirates does not display the deep understanding of life's regenerative force and chooses to kill an Indonesian woman for bringing life into this world. I would implore the Indonesian government to put out its arms to one of its children and bring Kartini home so that she and her baby can live and grow in a more humane world.

We can only hope that the UAE opens its eyes and observes the largest Muslim society in the world existing in tolerance and with humanity.

One poor maid, one tiny baby and death by stoning. It simply cannot be allowed to happen.
