Saparipan goes to semifinals

SANUR, Bali (JP): Indonesian bantamweight boxer Juan Saparipan was the only local boxer to survive in the first round semifinals at the 19th President's Cup international amateur boxing tournament here on Sunday.

Saparipan was among the four boxers contesting the semifinal. The other three failed to beat their opponents.

He beat Cesar Morales of Mexico with a 22-14 victory.

Karel Muskaman, in the flyweight division, lost to Erle Wilshire of Australia 6-14, Temuzin Rambing (welterweight) was ousted by Allalou Mohamed of Algeria, while Stevie Binalay (welterweight) proved to be no match for German Mirko Wolf losing 5-15.

The second round semifinals on Monday will see four more local boxers up against foreign opponents.

Albert Papilaya will meet Mahdi Kalani of Syria in the heavyweight division, Bara Gomies (welterweight) faces Lu Zhang Wei of China, Bonix Sawebelo (light welterweight) goes up against Romero Liberio of Mexico and Dikson Ton (light flyweight) fights against Nopadol. (Bona Beding)
