Safe Golkar, PBB rallies held

BOGOR, West Java: Thousands of Golkar supporters held their rally safely on Saturday, despite previous threats on party leaders against continuing with the campaign.

Campaigning was held in two different sites, Mekarwangi village and Sindangsari field in Tanah Baru village. Soon after the gathering broke up, the supporters convoyed and met at the Jl. Baru intersection.

The combined groups then moved on foot and in various vehicles along Jl. Pajajaran, Jl. Salak up to Jl. Pemuda, and dispersed after they reached the local Golkar office.

Observers attributed the peaceful proceeding to participants' adherence to police directions, and because they distributed yellow flowers to onlookers along their route.

En route to their destination, the Golkar convoy met with that of the Crescent Star Party (PBB) on their way home from a party gathering. They cheered each others on.

In Ujungpandang, capital of South Sulawesi, local residents continued to protest to the provincial election committee over some Golkar and National Mandate Party (PAN) legislative candidates.

Nurdin Halid, who was recently exonerated in a high-profile corruption case, had been earlier rejected by residents of Polmas regency.

Local people have also rejected Ibnu Munzir of Golkar, Asmar Oemar Saleh of PAN, and Dr Ulla of Golkar. (24/30)
