S. Sulawesi facing teacher shortage

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: With about 600 teachers retiring this year, the province of South Sulawesi desperately needs to recruit a new class of instructors.

The rector of Makassar University, M. Idries Arief, said on Friday he had received a report about the imminent shortage of teachers at schools across the province, including at elementary schools.

"We cannot allow this to happen. There must be a way to anticipate and prevent this shortfall," he said.

He said one alternative would be to reactivate retired teachers until new instructors were hired. -- Antara
