Ryan wins men's bowling gold

MANILA: Ryan Leonard Lalisang contributed a gold in the men's bowling competition at Pearl Bowling Center in Manila on Tuesday.

Ryan -- known as "Mr. Perfect" for several perfect scores in major competition, scored 1,425 points in six rounds -- with an average of 237 per round -- to beat the 36 other competitors from the region.

On the first day of the bowling competition, national bowlers also took the bronze medal thanks to Lie Joe Tjam. The silver went to Tee Markwin Lopez of the Philippines.

In the women's event, Indonesia's Novie Phang took the bronze.

The results were pleasing to team officials because heavily favored Malaysia and bowlers from the host country were expected to dominate the events.

"This is an amazing showing," team manager Singgih Gunawan was quoted as saying by Antara news service. "And we still have a long way to go, with three more days of competition." -- JP
