Ruben, Danny into selection finals

JAKARTA (JP): Grand Master (GM) Ruben Gunawan and International Master (IM) Danny Juswanto progressed on Sunday to the final of the 34th Chess Olympics Games national selection tournament here.

Ruben improvised in the third move to respond to the Queen Hindu defense applied by FIDE Master (FM) Hamdani Ruben. But in the 29th move Ruben repeated his moves three times and in the 33th move he claimed a draw. Ruben ended with a 1.5-0.5 victory against Hamdani.

Danny managed to take GM Edhi Handoko's knight in the 52th move forcing Edhi to give up immediately. Danny also had a 1.5- 0.5 win against Edhi.

The four players will join GM Utut Adianto and IM Cerdas Barus at the Olympics, to be held in Istanbul from Oct. 28 through Nov. 14. The Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) Masters Evi Lindiawati and Yenny Riayaningrum qualified for the women's team.

Evi was the first woman to get her place in the team after outshining PM Suyati in the 44th move with the Nimzo Hindia defense. Evi topped the standings with 5.5 match points.

Yenny got the last ticket to the Olympics following a draw with National Master (NM) Nanik Wijaya in the 53th move using the Caro-Kann defense. Yenny has 5 MP.

Evi and Yenni will join IM Upi D. Tamin and NM Ai Zakiah in the team. (ivy)
