'RRI' tower collapses

JAKARTA: The transmission tower of state Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) on Jl. Antena in Radio Dalam area, South Jakarta, collapsed on Saturday, slightly disrupting the radio's operations.

Strong winds that blew during heavy rain battered the 60-meter tower. As a result, about 15 meters of the tower collapsed, causing minor damage to at least four nearby buildings.

The broadcasting for the Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Medium Wave (MW) programs was disrupted, but it did not affect the Frequency Modulation (FM), Short Wave (SW) and World Space programs, Antara reported.

Shortly after the incident, however, the radio station restored operations after the antenna was replaced, according to Yunus, a technician of the radio station.

The collapsed tower caused a traffic jam along Jl. Radio Dalam. --JP
