Rp 50,000 fine for litter bugs

SEMARANG: Starting in September, anyone caught littering will be fined Rp 50,000 or sent to jail, Mayor Sukawi Sutarip announced on Thursday.

Sukawi said the penalty against littering is based on a 1993 bylaw that had not been enforced to date, Antara reported.

He did not say the minimum length of incarceration.

The mayor blamed recurrent floods in Semarang on piles of trash blocking rivers and water drainage.

The plan to enforce the 1993 bylaw had been communicated to all neighborhood units in the city as well as the police. (04)
