Rp 25 million chair for E. Java governor

SURABAYA: The purchase of an imported Italian leather chair for Rp 25 million for the governor of East Java has sparked protest among provincial councilors, who have criticized it as "an absurd waste of money".

The controversial chair, made out of thick hardwood and stainless steel, was part of the gubernatorial office's new procurements.

"It's complete nonsense for such a chair to be valued at such a high price," Fathur Rosyad, a local councilor, said on Friday.

The new chair was included in furniture items acquired as part of an estimated Rp 15 billion renovation project at the gubernatorial building.

Governor Imam Utomo, however, said he had no idea of the purchase as the renovation project was instigated under the former governorship of Basofi Soedirman.

Imam vowed not to use the "expensive" office until the matter is settled. (nur/edt)
