Robberies of taxi drivers common

Taxi drivers are a familiar part of our lives. They are ready to take you whenever and wherever you want to go. They do their jobs without fear of being robbed or murdered. We were shocked over the news that several taxi drivers were recently killed (SCTV's Derap Hukum program).

They were robbed and killed, leaving their wives and children to suffer. Their wives must struggle for their children's future. Robberies of taxi drivers are commonly featured in newspapers nowadays, especially in Jakarta. I really feel concerned about the increasing level of crime.

The most recent story on taxi driver robberies was published in The Jakarta Post on Oct. 18 (One taxi driver killed, two others hurt in robberies). Surprisingly, the suspects are teenagers who are senior high school and university students. People are angry and concerned about this. In this case, many precautions must be taken in order to avoid similar crimes and more victims.

Police, taxi owners and the drivers should be more careful and aware of the threat. Taxi drivers should receive training on how to protect themselves. The suspects should be severely dealt with.
